Pharmacological Properties
Carodyl Chewable belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Carprofen exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic effects. Its action is associated with inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX), resulting in reduced prostaglandin synthesis involved in pain, inflammation, and fever.
After oral administration, carprofen is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is highly bound to plasma proteins, metabolized primarily in the liver, and excreted mainly via feces and, to a lesser extent, urine.
Indications for Use
Carodyl Chewable is indicated for the relief of inflammation and pain associated with acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders, including osteoarthritis. It is also used for the control of postoperative pain following orthopedic or soft tissue surgery. Intended for use in dogs only.
Contraindications
Do not use in animals with hypersensitivity to carprofen or other NSAIDs. It is contraindicated in cases of gastrointestinal ulcers or bleeding, severe hepatic, renal, or cardiac impairment. Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolemic, or hypotensive animals. Not recommended for puppies below the manufacturer’s specified minimum age or for pregnant and lactating animals unless under veterinary supervision.
Dosage and Method of Administration
Administer orally according to the dog’s body weight and veterinary instructions. The typical recommended dose is 4.4 mg/kg per day, given as a single dose or divided into two equal doses. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or duration of treatment.
Adverse Reactions
In rare cases, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased appetite, or lethargy may occur. Very rarely, gastrointestinal ulceration, renal dysfunction, or liver enzyme elevations may develop. If adverse reactions are observed, discontinue use and consult a veterinarian immediately.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal disturbances, depression, or renal impairment. In case of overdose, initiate symptomatic and supportive treatment under veterinary supervision.
Special Warnings and Precautions
Do not administer concurrently with other NSAIDs or glucocorticoids. Ensure adequate hydration during treatment. Use with caution in elderly or debilitated animals. Veterinary monitoring is recommended during long-term therapy.
